The capital of Crete - the modern city of Heraklion - was named after the Greek hero Hercules. Agia Pelagia is a small town overlooking the bay, 23 km west from Heraklion. Being once a fishing village, now it is a lively resort with white cottages standing along the narrow streets running down the hill to the sea. Spectacular views can be enjoyed from the new national road.

There are many taverns along the narrow beach. You will find all kinds of shops in the same area: jewelry and souvenir shops, internet cafes, ATM and car rental agencies. There are many small cafes and bars.
Local beach is a narrow strip of sand. The bay is protected from the winds and the sea is always calm. There are umbrellas and sun beds. You can rent a catamaran or any other equipment for a pleasant pastime. The sea is deep and clear, so be sure to try diving.

If you're looking for solitude, then pay attention to the beaches west of Agia Pelagia: Kladissos, Psaromoura, Mononaftis, or eastern Ligaria.
