Among the emerald waters of the gentle Ionian Sea is a real paradise called Zakynthos. The history of this island, sung by poets, goes far into the past. The location of the island makes it easy to get to the other Ionian Islands (Corfu, Paxi, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia and Ketira), and to the coast of the Peloponnese. Tourism here is developing rapidly, but at the same time, the interests of the local population are taken into account, which prevents the construction of huge complexes, so as not to disturb the natural environment of Zakynthos. I must say that the island is famous for its indescribable natural beauty, richness of cultural and historical monuments, as well as traditional hospitality. Zakynthos is the most beautiful bays, white sand, mountains dressed in the mantles of pine forests, the greenery of climbing vineyards, olive and almond groves, golden beaches, clear waters and large Caretta sea turtles, which have been sailing for thousands of years in the month of July to the beaches of Zakynthos with to lay their eggs in the sand. Modern Zakynthos is a well-preserved centuries-old tradition: so, even today famous music and folklore festivals are held here with regularity. Cozy and comfortable hotels with a fairly high level of service, numerous restaurants, colorful taverns and bars, well-equipped beaches with excellent conditions for practicing all kinds of water sports, the emerald sea, a variety of fauna and flora presented and, of course, a favorable Mediterranean climate attract many tourists here. Here everyone will find everything for themselves for a full, wonderful and unforgettable vacation, full of positive emotions. The island's shop will offer you various souvenirs and products made by local craftsmen (ceramics, beautiful snow-white tablecloths embroidered by craftswomen, high-quality leather goods, handmade carpets and, of course, jewelry). Be sure to visit the Hanne Mi ceramics gallery, the famous Levantino souvenir shop, the small Gold M jewelry store. Lovers and connoisseurs of sweets will not be able to pass by the numerous pastry shops, one of which (Zakynthos) has been operating since 1910. Zakynthos is famous for its amazing landscapes that will not leave anyone indifferent. Perhaps the main attraction of the island is its magnificent sandy beaches, spread out in cozy bays. Only here you can see with your own eyes a rare species of sea turtles - Caretta-Caretta, living for millions of years on the southern coast of Zakynthos, as well as a rare species of seal called Monachus-Monachus. But the main pride of the island is the Marine Park-Reserve, opened more than 11 years ago, which includes the following beaches: Limni Keri, Laganas beach, Kalamaki, Strofades, and several small islands located south of Zakynthos. This park is represented by a typical Mediterranean ecosystem unique in its kind: sand dunes, as well as beaches that are washed by the waters of the Ionian Sea, in the waters of which very rare species of turtles, dolphins, bizarre sea birds, porcupines, and iguanas live. While relaxing on the island, be sure to visit the numerous museums of Zakynthos, among which the most popular are the following: the museum of Byzantine art, as well as the museum of two famous Greek poets who lived in Zakynthos - Dionysios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos. Do not pass by the house-museum of the Alexander Rom family, as well as by the Maritime Museum, where you can learn in detail the history of the Greek fleet. It should be noted that in Zakynthos, all buildings that are characterized by the color of ocher are carefully stored. All buildings are built in the traditional style, that is, with loggias, as well as graceful Venetian porticos. In the same style are made: the Strata Marina embankment, where lively life always reigns; the central square of the island - St. Mark, which is completely tiled; the Bohalis area, located directly under the Fortress, where you will find narrow streets, cozy coffee houses and restaurants where you can taste not only delicious dishes, but also enjoy old music. The fortress proudly rises above Bohalis, from which visitors have an amazing view of the modern island of Zakynthos, as well as the azure Ionian Sea. A favorite vacation spot for both local and visiting young people is the small town of Argassi, on the territory of which there is a famous old bridge dating back to 1800 (it is noteworthy that one part of the bridge is enclosed in sand, while the other rests in sea water). Zakynthos is proud of its Byzantine-style churches, among which I would like to highlight the ancient church of St. Dionysius, the preserved medieval church of St. Nicholas, the church of St. Maurus and the small church of St, Elipsos, hidden on a rock among green olive trees.
