Kalathas, Chania, Crete
Chania - the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the eponymous district. Until 1971, the city of Chania was also the capital of Crete. It is located in the west of Crete, at a distance of about 140 km from Heraklion and 70 km from Rethymnon. The city is located at the western base of Akrotiri peninsula, 8 km from Chania International Airport, which daily receives thousands of tourists coming to the island. The area combines all that Crete has to offer.
Chania - beautiful bays, gorges and caves, ancient palaces of nobles, ancient fortresses, unique temples and churches. This region, known for its natural beauty, is respectfully called "Oriental Venice". Chania is the greenest part of the island.
So many wars, defeats and victories experienced the city as times changed! Therefore, the appearance of Chania is contradictory and diverse. The architecture expresses Venetian and Turkish influence. Old Town is a maze of narrow streets and numerous buildings in the Venetian and Oriental style. The modern part of the city - elegant neoclassical buildings, broad avenues and squares. In the old part of the city it is worth to visit the walls surrounding the ancient town, the Venetian buildings, the church of St. Francis, the Church of the Saviour and St. Rocco, the Mosque of the Janissaries, the lighthouse - the witness of the Ottoman domination. In the western part of the old harbor on the seafront there is the Maritime Museum, which exhibits are connected with the history of seafaring Cretans.
The city has a market - the only one building in Greece of cruciform shape. The People's Garden, founded in 1870 - a real green oasis - a favorite vacation spot of the townspeople. The main centers: Georgioupolis, Kournas, Chania, Agia Marina, Paleochora, Sfakia, Elafonisi. Chania has lots of wonderful wide and clean beaches.
