Kalamata is one of the "happiest" cities in Greece, mainly due to its geographical location. Nestled at the foot of the imposing Mount Taygetos, Kalamata is the ideal base for those who want to discover the secrets of the Messenian region. Many tourist and cultural attractions can be easily reached from the city by car, taxi or bus. The best starting point for sightseeing around Kalamata is the historic city centre. Wandering through the narrow streets of the center, one can reach the old church, which was built in 1317 by Emperor Andronicus. Take a look at the city's Archaeological Museum - this beautiful Venetian-style building was built in 1742. Many interesting archaeological finds are exhibited here, including ancient mosaics depicting scenes of worship of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine.
