Hersonissos, Heraklion, Crete
Hersonissos is one of the oldest settlements on Crete, situated in the picturesque region, where turquoise waters meet with the charming cliffs of Lasithi. The name of the town comes from the Greek word “peninsula” that rises from the west over the Malian Gulf. At first, this area was inhabited as early as the Minoan period, around 1500 BC, close to the town of Anisaras west of the port of Hersonissos.
Hersonissos is located 26 km from Heraklion, along the promenade of the Malian Gulf. There is another lovely resort of Agios Nikolaos next to it, a little to the west.
Hersonissos is the unofficial capital of island tourism, one of the most cheerful and noisy resorts of Crete. There is a wide choice of restaurants, traditional taverns, boutiques and souvenir shops, discos and clubs. In the port area along the coast there goes a long line of bars, mostly Irish and Dutch. So it is not surprising that the most frequent visitors are the Dutch, Irish, British and Germans.
