"Greek Emerald", "Emerald of the Aegean Sea" - this is how the island of Thassos (Thasos, Thassos) is called. Located just 12 km from the mainland, the island of Thassos is one of the most popular holiday centers in the northern part of the country. The Greeks fell in love with Thassos for a long time: closer to the weekend, the inhabitants of the northern part of the country are drawn in a string to rest on the island of Thassos. This northernmost island in the Aegean is a first-class tourist destination. There is no airport on Thassos, so the easiest way to get to the island is by ferry from the cities of Kavala and Keramati. Almost the entire island is a large archaeological museum with significant collections of relics that have survived to this day, from the heyday of the Classic period. On the southeast coast of the island is the village of Aliki, which has many ancient architectural monuments. The ruins of temples and buildings prove that in the 7th century BC. the island was already developed and densely populated. Today Aliki is a small village with many bars and taverns. Tourists who have seen the crystal clear water in this place with their own eyes call the beaches of the village of Aliki the most beautiful in Greece. Archaeological excavations have revealed the ancient Agora, a theater, an ancient village, a trading port, city walls, an acropolis, the Sanctuary of Panna and many other interesting finds. The small area of the island allows you to go around it up and down by car. An independent trip to Thassos gives a number of advantages: ruins, historically significant places are everywhere, so there will be interesting and breathtaking views along the way. It is worth making a stop in the ancient city of Limenaria, where the Acropolis, the ancient theater and the temple of Athena have been preserved. The city has an interesting ethnographic museum, which displays ancient dishes, a loom and handmade costumes. The best beaches of Thassos The exotic beach of Tripiti is located near Limenaria. The proximity of major tourist complexes provides the beach with a high level of popularity. Tripiti is surrounded by caves, steep cliffs covered with dense vegetation and is distinguished by the richness of the underwater world. The combination of white sand and blue water enchants everyone who has been here at least once. The beach is well equipped: sun loungers, umbrellas, taverns, bars, showers, water sports. Another popular beach of Limenaria is Makryammos. This fantastic place is bathed in greenery, and the cleanest sea and sand have made the beach a Blue Flag winner. While children jump on the trampoline or play on the playground, adults can take part in beach volleyball competitions or spend time on the tennis court. Pefkari Beach is famous for its water sports and the unique scent of the pines (“pefko” means pine in Greek). Bars, taverns, extreme entertainment will not let tourists get bored. Another good beach on the island of Potos, which is almost 2 kilometers long. In Potos you can rent boats and enjoy the tranquility. Perhaps the best beach of Thassos - Golden Beach - is located between the villages of Skala Potamia and Skala Panagia. The two-kilometer beach, surrounded by greenery, is especially loved by families and groups of young people, which is why Golden Beach is considered the liveliest and most crowded part of the island. For the purity of the water and the excellent ecological condition, this beach was awarded the Blue Flag. Golden Beach has everything you need for families with children and outdoor activities. To see with your own eyes the rich colors of the local nature, you need to become one of the inhabitants of Thassos for some time. Then the secret of the Greeks' love for this emerald of the North Aegean Islands will be revealed. Come to rest in Thassos, and you will be convinced of the boundless beauty of this paradise. In ancient times, Thassos was famous for its gold mines, and today honey and locally produced olive oil are of great value. Since the island is located in the north of the country, it cannot boast of warm winters, and in summer it is a little cooler on Thassos than on the southern islands of Greece. The capital of the island of Thassos - Limin or Thassos, like the surrounding villages of the island - is picturesque and calm.
