Neighborhood
Ierissos is located in the north-eastern part of Mount Athos peninsula of Chalkidiki, on the site of the ancient city of Akanthos. According to the historical and archaeological evidence, the city was founded in 655 BC. The surviving chronicles of the end of VI century BC tell about the participation of Akanthos in the Persian wars.
In 348 BC Akanthos was conquered by the Macedonians. Later, the city was annexed to the region of Ouranopolis, and then, around 200 BC, it was conquered by the Romans who wanted to control this rich province and its port.
The ancient city of Akanthos was replaced by Ierissos, which is the oldest and the largest city in this part of Greece, with more than 3,000 inhabitants.
Culture:
Throughout the summer Ierissos holds colorful festivals, art exhibitions and concerts. There is a cultural center in the center of Ierissos where you can watch Greek movies.
Nature:
In addition to the rich cultural life, Ierissos is attractive for its natural beauty. It is an ideal destination for those seeking peace in the natural environment, where the combination of green mountains and the crystal clear waters of the bay create a magical landscape. A walk along the golden beach will help you escape from the daily bustle.
Beaches:
Beautiful Kakoudia coastline is known not only for its crystal clear waters and golden sandy beach, but also rocks, where the Greek director Theo Angelopoulos filmed the "Eternity and a Day". In 1998 his film went on to win the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Climate:
Ierissos is known for mild temperate climate with little precipitation in winter and hot sunny summer days (more than 300 days or more than 3,000 hours per year). The lowest temperature recorded from December to February - about 7,5-19 C; while the highest temperature recorded during the summer months: up to 23-34 C.
Entertainment:
There is no other place where you can combine different forms of pastime as in Ierissos. You will find there picturesque Greek taverns that offer a wide variety of local dishes for every taste and a wide variety of Greek and foreign music. There are lots of cafés, bars and clubs.
All the necessary services, such as banks (Ethniki, Agrotiki), large supermarkets (Masoutis, Lidl, Dia), bakeries, gyms, schools, police, port - all of them are located in the center of Ierissos.
Here you will find many small shops selling local products such as olive oil, honey, ouzo, marmalade and so on.
The largest district hospital is located in Polygyros, 60 km from Ierissos. You will find a medical center and several pharmacies in the town.
How to reach Ierissos:
Nearest airport - Thessaloniki International Airport (direct flights from Russia, Britain, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Austria and the Netherlands). You can reach the complex from the airport (100 km) by your own car. Otherwise, you may rent a car, take a taxi or use the intercity bus (bus station in Thessaloniki is located at a distance of 6 km from the airport).
There is a modern highway from Thessaloniki to Ierissos, so that the route will not take you more than one and a half hours.
