Athos, Chalkidiki
Athos is the third, the easternmost peninsula of Chalkidiki region, and its most interesting and beautiful part. Sunning nature, mountain ranges covered with green forests and crystal-clear waters of the bay - the landscape is truly magical.
There are numerous archaeological sites, but its main attraction is Athos - Orthodox monastic republic. Being a part of Greece, it has a long history and totally unique spiritual heritage of global significance. Mount Athos is one of the most important and revered shrines for many people. Currently, there are 20 monasteries and 12 hermitages, as well as many other smaller religious communities. Any man with a special permit (get in touch with the Thessaloniki Pilgrim's Bureau) has the right to visit all the monasteries of Mount Athos.
However, even tourists who are not interested in the Orthodox shrines will find many notable attractions on Mount Athos. At the very border of the monastic republic there is a small town of Ouranoupoli. This city was founded almost two and a half thousand years ago. Now Ouranoupoli serves as the main point of contact between the monastic Athos region and the rest of the world. From here the pilgrims go on a journey to the Holy Mountain. In addition, Ouranoupoli offers regular boats for those who wish to admire the relics of Mount Athos from the sea. This is the only option that women can use to see the main Orthodox shrines. You can visit six of the twenty monasteries, ending the sea walk on the right bank of Athos harbor. In addition, there is a regular ferry service from Ouranoupoli to the main harbor of the monastic republic - the port of Dafni.
Ierissos - another ancient town of Mt. Athos Peninsula. Here you may also try sea tours around the Holy Mountain. Within 3,5 kilometers from Ierissos you will find the city of Akanthos known for the best preserved monuments of the ancient history of the peninsula of Mount Athos. Here you can see the ancient city walls, the buildings of the Acropolis and other architectural constructions of the Hellenistic period. In addition, there are are well-preserved churches of Byzantine period and ancient necropolis with more than six hundred burials.
