Mykonos

Greece / isl. Mykonos

Mykonos is one of the most popular and most visited islands in Greece. It is part of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea. Mykonos can be proud for its natural and architectural attractions and historic heritage. According to the legends and myths of ancient Greece, the island was named in honor of Micon - the son of the god Apollo. It was just in Mykonos where Hercules defeated the mighty giants, after which their huge figures petrified and turned into majestic rocks.

The island is perfect both for quiet and active and fun-filled holiday.

Mykonos is a good example of traditional Greek style blended harmoniously with the benefits of civilization. Everything here is built on contrasts - white houses and the blue sea, secluded beaches and hot beach parties, the coolness of the sea and the hot sun. Every town of the island is a charming maze of narrow streets full of white houses with colored windows and terracotta roofs, surrounded by groves of olives and oranges that give shade and coolness.

The ancient world, shrouded in mysteries and secrets, is hidden everywhere. When strolling through the halls of the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum, one can move to many centuries ago. Try incredibly exciting excursions to such historic sites of Mykonos as Alefkandra (the so-called Little Venice), Aegean Maritime Museum, beautiful Byzantine church of Panagia Paraportiani and, of course, the famous amphora with depiction of Trojan horse (VII century BC).

The island's capital Chora is considered to be a great tourist attraction. Despite the fact that it is a modern city, Chora has not lost its true spirit and distinctive local colour. Traditional Cycladic architecture of the city makes a lasting impression: narrow whitewashed streets, white houses with blue roofs, windmills, which are found at every turn, and the local pelicans - all this creates an image of a truly fabulous place. The next attraction is the port, where a special atmosphere is created by a huge number of magnificent yachts, fishing boats and modest spacious ferries. Here you can try different sea excursions to the various and scenic islands of the Aegean Sea.

Beaches of Mykonos deserve special attention. The warm water of the Aegean Sea has an amazing color - from light turquoise to deep blue-green shade. Here you can find a beach for every taste - quiet, almost deserted places where you can spend time in peace, listening to the sound of the sea and the cries of birds (beautiful Elia Beach), or crowded, with lots of entertainment (Psarou, Platis Gialos, Agrari, Aphroditi). The island has a lot of nudist beaches - Paranga, Elia, Paradise.

Nightlife in Mykonos is in a bustle until dawn. The sounds of rock, jazz, bouzouki are everywhere. A huge number of night clubs, entertainment centers, bars, discos and restaurants await visitors until sunrise. The beaches of Paradise and Super Paradise host beach parties almost every night. Greek taverns will amaze with local food. You should definitely try local cheeses, olives, oil of the highest quality, as well as thyme honey. The highlight of any meal will be a glass of tart flavored wine produced from Greek grapes. Shoppers also will not be bored. Almost every town of the island has many shops - from large malls to small shops with souvenirs (many of which are made by local craftsmen).

You can visit Mykonos hundreds of times. Each time it will open its new, unexpected and unforgettable line that will forever remain in the heart of even the most experienced traveler.
