Platanias is a famous coastal village located 10 km west of Chania and is the most famous tourist resort of Crete. The name of the village comes from the Platania trees that grow on the banks of the Platanias river that crosses the village. According to history, on the cliff of Platanias stood the ancient city of Pergamos and the tomb of Agamemnonas. Opposite the village is the islet of Agioi Theodori, which today is the breeding ground for Kri-Kri mountain goats. Platanias consists of the old part of the village at the top of the hill - Pano Platanias, and the modern continuation of the village towards the sea - Kato Platanias. The small old traditional town stretches across the hill and is characterized by picturesque streets, gardens full of flowers and great views from the top. There are several restaurants and cafes here, offering wonderful views of the environment. Kato Platanias is a very lively part of the village with a number of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes. The center of the village is a square with a variety of shops, restaurants and bars. The proposed accommodation is scattered from the coast - to the top of the hill. Long sandy beach - very well organized, with beach bars and sports activities. The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag from the EU. Along the main road you will find everything you want: post office, banks with ATMs, supermarkets, pharmacies, open-air cinema. There is also a Medical Center, a private playground for children, schools. A mini-train departing from the central square of Platanias makes a two-and-a-half-hour tour of the area. Throughout the day the village is very lively; there are many cafes and taverns (in the center - Mylos tou Kerata, Vigli tavern and Cosmo - on a hill), restaurants and shops. The village has some of the best nightclubs (Mylos), bars (Utopia, Splendid, Tropicano) and traditional music clubs (Gorgones and Mages) of the region. Platanias is the ideal place if you like an active and "noisy" holiday. The village of Platanias organizes celebrations 4 times a year. The main celebration is the veneration of the Holy Mother of God on August 15th. August 6 - Transfiguration of Jesus, in the church on the road to Draciana. November 3 - the celebration of St. George, in a small village, in Drakiana. On this day, locals taste wine. January 17th is the celebration of St. Antonios, in the west of the village. There is frequent bus transportation (every 15 minutes) from Chania. Souda Port and the International Airport are located half an hour from the village if you are traveling on the National Road (otherwise it will take a little longer). The good location of the village (near the National Road of Crete and Chania) and frequent transportation makes it easy to travel to other regions of Chania and Crete.
